Preparing Cowboy Coffee

Cowboy Coffee

Boiled coffee, the first method used to extract the flavor from roasted and ground beans, is sometimes called cowboy coffee, because all it takes to make it is a campfire, a pot, coffee, and fresh water.Tossing an eggshell into the the pot will help settle the grounds, but the liquid that is poured into the cup should be hot and strong.

In 1711 in France someone discovered that if ground coffee was put in the bottom of the pot or in a cloth bag and boiling water poured over it, the brew resulting from this infusion, a steeping
method , was less bitter and left fewer grounds in the coffee cup. Turkish Market

Percolating coffee --- also an infusion, but one where grounds are kept separate from water---allows hot water to extract solubles from ground coffee, then drip down through perforations in the pot. Filtration adds to this process a porous filter of paper, cloth, or metal to isolate the grounds more completely.

How are Coffee and Tea Alike and Different?

Photobucket turk cafe 2 Plain water aside, coffee and tea are the two most widely consumed beverages in the world. Different nationalities tend to favor one over the other....coffee is more popular in the United States, tea in the United Kingdom... with custom, history and availability all playing a role in the matter of preference. Both of these drinks are prepared by hot water extraction, tea with water slightly hotter than that used for coffee. Tea is made from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant, coffee from dried and roasted Coffea seeds, Photobucket and the processing of each is very different.

Both beverages contain caffeine (a cup of coffee more than twice as much as a cup of (black tea), and both have antioxidant properties. Neither is considered addictive, both have been used for medicinal purposes. Both have health benefits to offer. Coffee, however has probably been more often maligned, perhaps because of the revolutionary ideas associated with gatherings of coffee drinkers.
